New Year's News

Welcome Back!!

We had a fun and productive first week of 2013. Please read on to see what we’re up to:
After sharing how we spent the holidays, we reviewed our new library routine. Students may still check out two books of their own  choice each week, however, their first choice needs to be a good fit chapter book and their second choice is any age appropriate book.

Next, we completed the winter session of the district M.A.P. assessment for reading. I am so very proud of all the children. Wow, have we grown since August! Keep up the great work students! This week we will complete the math portion of the assessment. I’ll be sending home your child’s score sheets as soon as we have completed testing and I receive the data.
In reading, we continue working on fluency and comprehension skills. We’re reading like detectives and retelling like reporters by re-reading passages once or twice and answering with details who, what, when, where, why/how. While reading the same text over and over sounds boring, we are learning that by the third read we can act out the action and imagine in our minds the story unfolding. We have fun changing our voices to fit the characters as well.  The first read gives us each word, the second read our phrasing starts to flow, and by the third read we really see the ‘show’!

Money, money, money! Counting coins are keeping us busy in math and boy is that skip counting  getting tricky! Please practice counting coins, different ways to make $1.00, and knowing the value for each coin. Skipping from 25 to 10 to 5 to 1 is challenging when we count on with a handful of different coins.
This Just In… Mr. Govig’s  4th Graders have been our buddy class this year and have invited us to join them on their field trip to Colossal Cave! We are going Tuesday, January 29th. Details coming soon!

The trip will be at no cost to children. We are working on getting a discounted fee for adults, please be watching for updates. Student admissions and buses are provided by tax credit monies.
Stay tuned for weekly updates….
